Spring Lawn Seeding: Why ProVista is a Game-Changer

Thinking About Seeding Your Lawn This Spring? Read This First.

Learn why spring lawn seeding might finally be a good idea, how ProVista Kentucky Bluegrass changes the game, and how to avoid weeds like crabgrass from taking over.

❌ Why I Used to Say “Don’t Seed in Spring”

If you’ve been around a while, you know I’ve always recommended not seeding your lawn in the spring. It wasn’t because spring is bad — it’s actually great for moisture and mild temps — but because of one big problem: you can’t prevent crabgrass without killing your seed.

More on that in a minute. First, let’s talk about the three things that need to align for successful seeding, no matter the time of year.

✅ The 3 Keys to Lawn Seeding Success

1. Seed-to-Soil Contact

For grass seed to grow, it needs direct contact with the soil. That’s why prepping the ground properly matters. Whether you're doing a full renovation or overseeding, you need to:

  • Kill off any existing turf if necessary
  • Mow/scalp the area low
  • Aerate or use a slice seeder to work seed into the soil

No contact = no germination.

2. Favorable Temperatures

Your seed needs soil temps consistently above 55°F to germinate. Air temps matter too — once the seed sprouts, a major cold snap or heat wave can kill fragile seedlings before they’ve matured.

📱 Not sure when to seed? Our DIY Lawn Care App takes the guesswork out. It gives you real-time soil temperatures based on your location, so you know exactly when it’s time to drop seed — not just guess based on the calendar. Download our FREE DIY Lawn Care App Here

📌 Pro Tip: Cool-season grass is considered "mature" after it’s been mowed twice — usually 45 to 60 days after seeding.

That’s why timing your seeding window is so important. Check your area’s average first 90°F day to make sure your grass can get established before summer hits.

3. Consistent Moisture

You’ll need to keep your seed moist — light, frequent watering several times a day at first. Once the seed sprouts, continue consistent watering to support root development.

But here’s the downside...

⚠️ The Real Reason Spring Seeding Is Tricky: Weeds

All that watering doesn’t just help your seed — it helps weed seeds too. And one of spring’s worst offenders is crabgrass.

Crabgrass is a warm-season annual weed that:

  • Germinates in spring
  • Spreads all summer
  • Drops seed in the fall
  • Comes back stronger the next year

To prevent this, we use pre-emergent herbicides like prodiamine in early spring. But here’s the catch:

Pre-emergents kill your grass seed too.

So if you seed in the spring, you can’t use pre-emergent. And if you don’t use it, crabgrass will sprout and eventually choke out your new grass.

This is why I’ve always said: seed in fall, not spring.

🌱 But Now Everything’s Changed — Thanks to ProVista

There’s a new player in the game: ProVista Kentucky Bluegrass — and it’s a total game-changer for spring seeding.

Here’s why:

  • ✅ It’s glyphosate-tolerant (yes, Roundup won’t kill it)
  • ✅ You can kill off weeds like crabgrass, poa annua, goosegrass, and bentgrass without hurting your lawn
  • ✅ It’s darker green and slower growing, meaning you mow less and enjoy better color

And here’s the best part:

You can start spraying glyphosate just 3 days after germination.

This gives you complete post-emergent control over weeds, without sacrificing your newly seeded lawn.

🌿 Why ProVista Is Perfect for Spring Seeding

Kentucky Bluegrass is a bit slower to establish than fescue or ryegrass, but that’s actually a good thing in spring — you’ve got the full growing season ahead for it to fill in.

It also spreads via rhizomes, so over time it thickens up naturally. And did I mention it feels amazing barefoot?

🧼 Starting Fresh? ProVista Keeps It Clean

If you’re burning down your lawn to start over, ProVista gives you a tool that no other grass seed offers: ongoing weed control.

You can knock out:

  • Bentgrass
  • Clumping tall fescue
  • Goosegrass
  • Poa annua
  • Dallisgrass

...all without hurting your new turf.

Even if those weeds come back from seed, glyphosate gives you a clean slate — every time.

📅 When to Seed in Spring (Example: Crown Point, IN)

In places like Crown Point, Indiana, the first 90°F day usually comes after June 1. So if you seed around early April, your grass has a solid 60 days to get mature.

📌 Final Tips

  • Prep your soil well — seed-to-soil contact is everything
  • Keep the seed moist daily until it germinates and matures
  • Choose ProVista for spring seeding so you can control weeds post-emergence
  • Don’t panic if weeds show up — you’ve got the ultimate tool in your back pocket
