Product Description:

GCI is proud to be known for having “weed-free” grass seeds, 0% weed seed, and 0% other crop and now they celebrate Blue Heat being Blue Tag certified as well! Blue Heat is a 4-way blend of high-quality MVS Kentucky Bluegrass seed. These four varieties are very similar to each other and will blend well together.

If you are in search of a high-end athletic field lawn look that can be cut short, this is your seed! If you prefer taller mowing heights, then you're also in the right place.

GCI looks for three basic things when choosing the varieties that go in their grass seed mixes/blends. It must be readily available to them, it must have an excellent history in the NTEP trials (National Turfgrass Evaluation Program), and it must be affordable.

Here’s what you can expect in your GCI Turf Blue Heat:

  • BLUE NOTE is a compact America type bluegrass featuring excellent color, texture, density and shade tolerance under normal to moderate fertility management. Suggested for elite bluegrass mixtures intended for sod production, golf/sports turf and professional landscape.

  • Acoustic (PPG-KB 1131) is a top performer in the NTEP trial overall mean quality. Acoustic has proven to be an exceptional choice in the Northeast and Transition Region for Turfgrass Quality! Acoustic exhibits excellent Summer Patch resistance, scoring high at the Raleigh, NC NTEP location. And with top ratings on summer density and dark green genetic color, Acoustic comes through loud and clear as the next Kentucky Bluegrass standout!

  • Bolt seed jumps out of the ground faster than any other Kentucky bluegrass in the recent NTEP trials. Bolt ranked first in seedling vigor and % establishment. Its rapid germination and fast establishment allow it to crowd out weeds, suppress poa, and form a dense sward. Bolt exhibits top NTEP turf quality and fine-bladed texture, making it an ideal choice for all applications. Bolt has excellent disease resistance and is well adapted to both high and low-maintenance uses. Bolt’s quick establishing ability makes it a great choice for sod farms, sports fields, and home lawns.
  • Legend is an aggressive, Midnight-type, dark green Kentucky bluegrass variety ideal for use in both high and low-maintenance applications. Legend has a very fine leaf texture and an aggressive nature making it an ideal choice for high-quality turf needs such as golf tees and superior athletic fields. Legend is also ideal for sod production and low-mow applications where the highest turf-qual- ity is required. In addition, Legend has improved disease resistance, producing a clean, healthy turf. When only the best will do - rely on the Legend.

How much seed to use?

  • Overseeding into an existing KBG lawn: One – two (1-2) pounds per 1000 square feet.
  • Seeding bare ground: Three to four (3-4) pounds per 1000 square feet.

When should you plant Blue Heat Kentucky Bluegrass (KBG) grass?

Fall is a great time to seed Blue Heat KBG. You definitely do not want to seed Blue Heat KBG too late in the fall, though. Plant Blue Heat KBG seed when soil temperatures are right around 60° F. Your air temperature should be around 75° to 85°at this time. To check your soil temperatures, be sure to use a very high-quality SOIL THERMOMETER to ensure accuracy.

Your Blue Heat KBG seed will need plenty of time to germinate because it takes anywhere from 14-30 days to germinate. Do not make the mistake of waiting too late to plant Blue Heat KBG seed. August 1st – September 15th is a great time frame, depending on where you live in the country and what your soil and air temperatures are. Patience is required while waiting on KBG to sprout. We only recommend springtime seeding when absolutely necessary.

Germination:

The trick to seed germination is to KEEP THE SEED MOIST! Water multiple times a day, light and frequently every day to ensure the ground and seed stays moist.

Blue Heat KBG seed can take anywhere from 4 to 21 days to germinate, depending on environmental conditions. Be patient…it will come up with time. Once you have germination, you can slowly revert back to watering 1” per week…deep and infrequent.

During hot, dry weather, established Blue Heat KBG may need as much as 1.5” – 2” of water per week.
