Warm White vs Multi-Color Christmas Lights: Which Classic Look Fits Your House?
Hey y’all —
It’s for sure time to start thinking about your Christmas light display. After all, wouldn’t you rather hang them now while it’s still warm rather than waiting until early December when it may not be?
This one is the look decision: warm white vs multi-color (including the retro “Charlie Brown” option). If you want the full install training, clips, plugs, and measuring walkthrough, that already lives in the DIY Professional Christmas Lights Resource Center — I’m not rewriting that here.
Key takeaways — warm white vs multi-color Christmas lights
- Hang while it’s still warm if you can — same advice Allyn gives every year before December cold sets in.
- Warm white = clean, simple, classy roofline / windows / doors (Allyn’s house look).
- Multi-color comes two ways that are not the same bulb: clear-domed FlexFilament multi-color, and frosted/opaque retro “Charlie Brown.”
- Removable bulbs mean you can change the look year to year without redoing the whole install.
- Start simple with the 100 ft Christmas Light Bundle (plugs already installed), or go custom with the 300 ft / 1,000 ft packages.
- Full how-to stays on the resource center; browse all options in Christmas Lights and Christmas Light Bundles.
Why this is a look decision (not another install guide)
My lights are commercial quality and have MANY advantages over store-bought lights — the main one being they are much brighter, but they also last longer as they are made of better materials.
For clip options and why the right clip matters on a custom run, watch this Best Clips walkthrough:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw-w7KGlQLs
I promise you, custom cutting your own lights to the exact measurements of your home is not as difficult as it may seem. The biggest hangup to this strategy, however, is that no matter how easy it is, some folks do not want to add on their own male and female plugs. Watch this plug video if that’s you:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4vGO6SRtdU
If you don’t want to do that, you can still get the bulbs and clips with a semi-custom install: 25-foot lines that already have the plugs installed, higher-quality materials, interchangeable bulbs, and integrated clips. Check out the 100 ft package here — perfect if you’re just starting with a basic roof outline.
Warm white: clean, simple, and classy
Now at my house, I have always done completely warm white for my roofline, ridges, hips, and even around my windows and doors. This is the ultimate clean, simple, and classy look.
This year, we go the 2700K true warm white bulbs in stock as well.
Important: That’s Allyn’s newsletter wording for this year’s warm-white shipment — treat it as current-stock color talk, not a universal Kelvin claim on every warm-white SKU forever. Last year’s shipment came in a little different color that was more golden, and the feedback wasn’t that good (although some folks did like them).
If you bought warm white bulbs from me in the past, watch this notice video before you mix old and new packs:

Want more side-by-side white-shade context from Allyn’s Christmas light videos:
The clear-domed FlexFilament warm white / color family lives here: C9 LED Shatterproof FlexFilament Bulbs.
Multi-color option 1: clear-domed FlexFilament (same style as Allyn’s house, in color)
Over the years I’ve gotten a ton of requests for colored lights, and I now have 2 options.
The first are the same clear-domed filament bulbs that I have on my house, but instead of warm white, they are multi-colored. They are super bright just like mine, but in varied colors.
Here is a video from last year where we put these up at my buddy Cam’s house. You can see we did a complete job from start to finish in 5 hours with 2 people — that’s a real install anecdote from that house, not a timed lab test for every home.

These lights are available here, and they’re also an option inside our 100 ft, 300 ft, and 1,000 ft packages that save you money by bundling everything together (less on shipping).
Note from the live FlexFilament / 100 ft bundle pages: this year’s multicolor pack colors are slightly different than last year — Red, Blue, Green, Gold, and Purple. Confirm the picker on the product page when you order.
Multi-color option 2: “Charlie Brown” / retro opaque (not the same as clear multi)
But I also have another option, and it’s what we call the “Charlie Brown” look — or some folks say these lights remind them of an episode from Stranger Things. In short, they have a more “retro 80s” look. They have a frosted / opaque dome. Still bright LED — and on this style, Allyn’s point in the newsletter is you can string a long run on a single plug (he cites up to 250 of them). Treat that as product-path guidance for these LEDs / your outlet plan, not a universal “every Christmas light on earth” rule. For the full amperage / length training, use the resource center videos.
Charlie Brown PDP: C9 LED Multi Opaque - Retro Look Bulbs (Charlie Brown)
This year’s Charlie Brown / multi-opaque pack colors (from the live PDP): Red, Blue, Amber, Green, and Warm White. Again — different look than the clear FlexFilament multi pack. Don’t mix the two stories.
Here you can see we did these at my buddy Jason’s house. And this was actually year 2 for his custom display. The first year we did red/white candy cane, then switched them out to Charlie Brown for the second year — another advantage to our lights is that you can switch out the bulbs year-to-year to REALLY keep things fresh. (Removable bulbs / year-to-year changes are also called out in the Christmas Light Guide ebook.)

Which look should you pick?
Warm white if you want the quiet, classy outline — roofline, ridges, hips, windows, doors — the look Allyn runs at his house.
Clear FlexFilament multi if you want that same bright filament look, just in color (Cam’s install is the reference).
Charlie Brown / retro opaque if you want the frosted 80s / Stranger Things vibe (Jason year 2).
Faceted C9s are another brightness/style lane on the collection if you’re comparing bulb families: C9 LED Faceted Bulbs. This article stays on the warm-white vs multi choice from the newsletter; faceted is a pointer, not a third deep dive.
Because the bulbs screw in and come back out, you can keep the same custom line and clips and change the personality next year. That’s the whole point of a removable-bulb system.
Packages (quick chooser — details stay on the collection)
I provide full training on how to install these lights here.
View all of our Christmas light options here:
The 100 ft package is the easiest to start with (plugs already installed).
The 300 ft package is custom and for those who want to do more than just the roof outline but also include the ridges and hips.
The 1,000 ft package is for contractors or for homeowners who want to do like me and outline their windows, garage, arches, and everything else. The picture above of my house is about 950 ft of light line and 950 bulbs — Allyn’s personal setup note. This is my 4th year with the same setup — no signs of weathering or aging even after being beat with Florida sun for months every season (again: personal anecdote from that display, not a formal durability study).

In a nutshell: pick the look (warm white, clear multi, or Charlie Brown), start with the package that matches how much of the house you’re outlining, and use the resource center for the install steps. Then enjoy the fact that next year you can swap bulbs and keep things fresh.
I’ll see you on the roof!
